How We Do Things On The Ranch

We often get emails, phone calls and Facebook messages from folks, asking for our advice or how we do things, so we will start posting topics to this page as they come up.
If you have a question, feel free to send us an email to mcdermitranch at gmail.com.

January 27, 2019 – Our first topic is on fostering lambs.  There are many ways to do this, and we have tried most of them, but have found that this method is the easiest, fastest and most successful.Fostering lambs at McDermit Ranch.***************************************************************************************************

February 8, 2019 – During cold weather, when it was -30C to -40C outside, and the barn temperature was -10C, we put rigid sheets of styrofoam insulation over top of the jugs to hold the heat down.  Once the lambs were dried off, sucking and warm, we removed them.  It gives the lambs a chance to get going before getting chilled.

September 6, 2019 – We have water bowls that the sheep can access from 4 pens and we have had boards temporarily screwed across the openings so sheep couldn’t jump through.
Since we wanted something quick and easy to move out of the way for cleaning and dumping them, my Dad helped me design and make these swing up dividers yesterday.
Now the water bowl cleaning job will get done when it needs to! Thanks again for your help Dad!

July 6, 2020 – This is how we water sheep in a paddock that doesn’t have access to water.  We use an old sprayer tank that never had chemicals in it, a lay flat hose for quick filling, and a calf sled.  The sled is light and easy to dump to clean out, or throw on the sprayer hitch to move to a new paddock.
Sometimes, I put a garden hose and float on it, but right now, I like to call the ewes over so I can check on them and see who is marked by the ram.
