2019 All Canada Classic Sheep Show and Sale

We attended the Classic in Humboldt, SK on July 19-21 with our Dorsets.
We were very pleased to have 1st place Junior Ewe Lamb, 2nd place Junior Ram Lamb, 3rd place Yearling Ewe and 6th place Yearling Ram.
The sale was well attended and prices were really strong, with a lot of animals going for over $1000.  The sheep industry in Canada is doing very well!

Our son, Carson and grandkids, Tyrell 9, Taylen 7 and Hunter 6 came with me and they were all a great help.  The kids took part in the Junior Show for the first time and had lots of fun.  They worked hard to halter train their ewe lambs for the show.

March Lambing 2019

After a record cold February, we are glad to have the weather turn warmer for our March lambing group.  We started on the 1st and are in full swing, with over 125 lambs on the ground so far.  They are strong, healthy lambs.

Pregnant ewes enjoying the warm, sunny day.

The first lamb, that 6 year old grandson, Hunter has seen born. (That he remembers, anyway).

503 and her triplets. This lamb always gets on her back whenever she lies down.

Shearing 2018

Yesterday was our annual shearing day and the first time in our new, not quite finished barn.
Big thanks to our shearers: Lorrie Reed, Logan McDermit, Donald Struck, Bonnie McNary and Reba McNeil.
Also, very glad to have help from our son, Carson; grandkids, Taylen and Hunter McDermit; and friends, Heather and Julian Ireland.
The snow storm arrived at 2:30 and we were all done by 7:30. What a good feeling to have all the sheep in the barn, as snug as bugs in a rug with the nasty weather going on outside.  (Click on the photos to enlarge them).

Shearing Day 2017

We had all of our sheep sheared on Friday and Saturday by Lorrie Reed’s shearing crew. Thanks to everyone for all your hard work:
- Lorrie Reed and his crew, Logan McDermit, Laverne Struck and Wayne Loewen;
- brothers Guido and Edmund Cousins from New Zealand who stopped in to help;
- Ken and Grace Small who came to give us a hand on Friday;
- Reba McNeill who drove 3 hours to do some shearing on Saturday;
- Heather Ireland and her son, Julien who came from Regina for Saturday;
- our daughter-in-law, Charlotte who looked after the meals, feeding everyone as well as keeping the shearing chute full.
Thanks so much, everyone!  ”Many hands make light work”!
767 sheep were sheared in about 10 hours!

New “Ewe Haul”

We recently purchased a “Ewe Haul” from Zubot Welding.  It has come in very handy already.  Our grandkids, Taylen (3), Hunter (2 1/2) and Tyrell (5) wanted to try it out when they visited today, so we went for a little spin around the lambing pasture.
Zubot Welding has a great line up of sheep and goat equipment.  Visit their website:

Thanksgiving 2014

We had a very enjoyable weekend with our family!  Our five grandkids had fun on the farm with the pet lamb, Snowflake, helping with chores and playing with the other farm animals.

The guys went moose hunting for the first time and brought home a cow that dressed 500 lbs so we will have lots of meat to share with all the families!  We also do a lot of deer hunting.  So with the lamb we raise and consume, we feel fortunate to be eating the best tasting and healthiest meat there is!

Randy, Nolan and Sarah also went bird hunting with Nolan’s German Short-haired Pointer, Tikka and got a Sharptail Grouse.  Another new sport for our family.

Shearing Day 2014

Yesterday was shearing day at McDermit Ranch!
A HUGE THANK YOU to our family for your help and hard work!  Logan, Nolan & Sarah, Carson & Rebecca, and grandkids Brooklyn, Tyrell, Taylen and Hunter made it the most fun, enjoyable shearing day in 29 years!!!  Missed little Cooper – maybe next year.
Also, thanks to the hardworking shearers – Lorrie Reed, Laverne Struck and Dave Hunter.  I don’t know how you guys do it day in and day out!! Between the 4 shearers (including Logan) they did 345 ewes and 9 rams in less than 8 hours!
The weather co-operated with a nice, sunny, calm day.  However, overnight we we got about 1/4″ of snow but it didn’t get colder than -4C so the sheep were fine.

Grandkids At Agribition

Our daughter-in-law, Rebecca McDermit, brought her 3 little kids to Agribition on Friday and spent the day with us.  Tyrell is 3, Taylen is 2 and Hunter is 11 months – such fun ages.  Our son, Nolan, his wife, Sarah and their 2 little kids, Brooklyn – 4, and Cooper – 2, came to watch the sheep show too.  Maybe next year we will get them in the Junior Show and the Costume Class!  Photo credits to Rebecca McDermit.

Weaning Lambs

We wean our lambs between 60 and 90 days old, so Ewes and lambs coming up an alley to the weigh scale.this past weekend we weaned and weighed the December-January born lambs with help from son, Nolan and 2 1/2 year old granddaughter, Brooklyn!  The biggest ram lamb weighed in at 91 lbs at 79 days old and the biggest ewe lamb was 80 lbs at 70 days old!

We are very happy with the whole pen of lambs.  I will be posting pictures of the ram lambs in the next few days.  They will be on our “Rams For Sale “ page.  Be sure to check them out!
