Spring News

Well, spring FINALLY arrived (about a month late)!  So life has been very busy here on the Ranch.  We have been pounding posts for more cross fencing…..just wrapped up spring lambing….. got pictures taken and posted on the website of some of the January ram lambs that we are offering for sale…..sheared the flock yesterday….. and hauled 9 big bags of the wool to the collection depot.  Now we will be getting ready for our trip to Barriere, British Columbia for the 2013 All Canada Classic sheep show and sale at the end of this month.

Below are photos of some of the January born ram lambs.  See our “2013 Rams For Sale” page for more photos and information.

Ram Sale – Saturday, September 8

Well, it’s just about here!  The first “Prairie All Breeds Ram Sale” at Johnstone Auction in Moose Jaw, SK on Saturday, September 8 at 1 pm.  I am on the planning committee and we have been busy getting the last minute things done.  We are hoping for a good turnout of buyers for the 80 rams and 60 ewes!  We have 14 different breeds of rams from 4 provinces coming!

Here at McDermit Ranch, we are getting ready to take 15 head – 5 rams and 10 ewe lambs.

See you there on Saturday!

August News

August has absolutely flown by!  The days are noticeably shorter and the nights are cooler.  Fall isn’t very far away!

We weaned the May born lambs the first part of August.  We plan to keep most of the ewe lambs as we are still increasing the flock.

There will be a nice selection of ram lambs available for sale that will be big and ready to go to work this fall.

The January ewe lambs have grown like crazy on pasture this summer.

Some of the May born ram lambs that we will be offering for sale will be out of the same sire as these January ewe lambs.

We have consigned 5 rams and 10 ewe lambs to the Prairie All Breeds Ram Sale in Moose Jaw, SK on September 8.  See pictures and information on our entries on this page.

We recently had the Shaw ram out for 2 weeks so we will be getting winter lambs between January 5 and 20.  Hope the weather is decent!

Haying is all done and the bales are all hauled in off the fields.  Our next project is some trenching and running electric wire for new water bowls.  There is no shortage of things to do!

Just had to put this picture on of our cat in the lamb hay feeder!

February Ram Lambs For Sale

Yesterday, I went through the pen of 17 purebred Dorset ram lambs that were born in February.  I picked out the top 7 to offer for sale as breeding rams.

Born between February 11 and 29, they are now between 95 and 107 days old.  Their rates of gain are between .75 pounds per day and 1.09 pounds per day.

See individual pictures and information on these ram lambs on our Rams For Sale page.
